Choosing Between Breast Lift and Reduction

Fit young woman wearing compression garment after breast lift and reductionSagging or heavy breasts are uncomfortable and frustrating for millions of women today. If you’re struggling and looking for a surgical solution, the main two options are breast lift and reduction. Both procedures can transform your figure and confidence but serve different purposes. That’s why you need expert guidance to choose.

At Image Surgical Arts, Dr. Brady Harris is known for artistry, expertise, and innovation in the cosmetic surgery field. With over 2,000 cosmetic surgeries performed in the last year alone, including hundreds of breast procedures, Dr. Harris has a reputation as one of Nashville’s most trusted cosmetic surgeons. Dr. Harris and our team are committed to active listening and custom treatment planning so your results feel and look completely natural.

If you want breast surgery but just aren’t sure which option is best for you, read on to learn a little more about each.

What’s the Difference Between a Lift and a Reduction?

Both surgeries involve reshaping breast tissue, but the focus is different.

Breast Lift

A breast lift (mastopexy) corrects sagging. This is a common concern for women after pregnancy and breastfeeding, but it’s also normal for breasts to sag over time due to gravity. Some women have sagging breasts from an early age due to genetics.

In a breast lift, Dr. Harris elevates drooping breasts, moving the nipples and areolas to a higher position and creating naturally youthful-looking breast mounds that sit higher on the chest.

A breast lift results in a small volume loss, but that’s not the primary goal.

Breast Reduction

In a breast reduction, Dr. Harris removes excess breast tissue and reshapes the breasts. He typically relocates the nipple-areola complex higher on the chest during a breast reduction, making them look proportionate based on the reduced volume.

This surgery is common among women with large, heavy, and painful breasts that cause issues like back pain and shoulder grooves.

The main goal with breast reduction is just that: Making the breasts smaller overall. While your breasts will look lighter and higher on the chest after the surgery, they won’t dramatically change position, as that’s the domain of a breast lift.

Choosing Your Procedure

A breast lift might be perfect if you want perkier breasts without much size change. On the other hand, if you want dramatically smaller breasts, a breast reduction may be the right option.

What if you want both? In that case, Dr. Harris often recommends a combination of breast reduction and lift.

You’ll receive honest recommendations and a surgical plan that suits your lifestyle, body, and vision.
