Why Submuscular Breast Implant Placement Works Better

Woman discusses breast implant options with her doctorAfter choosing breast augmentation, you’ve got many other decisions to make about your implants. While implant material, size, and shape are all important details, the placement of your implants is particularly critical to the success of your surgery.

Surgeons place breast implants above or below the chest muscle. The choice affects the final look, feel, and longevity. While some surgeons offer both options, submuscular placement (under the chest muscle) is generally preferred for its natural appearance and long-term benefits. In our blog this month, we delve into why.

Our triple board-certified cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Brady Harris of Image Surgical Arts, is a celebrated breast augmentation specialist. Performing more than 2,000 major surgeries annually, Dr. Harris is known for stunning breast augmentations that enhance each woman’s natural contours.

What Is Submuscular Breast Implant Placement?

Submuscular placement means the implant goes underneath the pectoral muscle rather than directly under the breast tissue.

This technique offers several advantages in appearance, longevity, and overall patient satisfaction compared to subglandular placement.

Why is Submuscular Placement Better?

Dr. Harris prefers submuscular breast implant placement for multiple reasons, including:

  • More Natural Look and Feel: The muscle provides extra coverage for the implant and helps it blend smoothly with the breast tissue.
  • Better Stability: The chest muscle helps hold the implant in place. This reduces the risk of the implant shifting or sinking lower (“bottoming out.”)
  • Lower Risk of Rippling: Dr. Harris strongly recommends silicone implants, which greatly reduce the risk of visible ripples under the skin. Submuscular breast implant placement further reduces that risk.
  • Improved Blood Supply: Many women schedule a breast lift and augmentation together. In this situation, submuscular placement helps maintain a healthy blood supply to the nipple and surrounding tissue.
  • Better Imaging Visibility: Implants above the muscle can obscure breast tissue in mammograms, making screenings more difficult. Placing implants beneath the muscle improves the visibility of the back portion of the breast during mammograms.

Dr. Harris believes our patients deserve excellent outcomes and long-lasting results. With his superior surgical ability and the use of proven techniques like submuscular breast implant placement, we help you love your new breasts.
